There are a few reasons why this might be happening...
Does your TV support Chromecast or AirPlay?
You can cast from the CGX app to TVs or plug-in TV devices over Chromecast or AirPlay*. If your TV or plug-in TV device doesn’t support Chromecast or AirPlay, you'll need to look at some other options.
* Unfortunately, version 1 of AirPlay is not supported. If you're casting to TV via AirPlay, your TV will need version 2 of AirPlay (AirPlay V2).
Devices you can plug in to your TV
All of these devices plug in to your TV's HDMI port and can be used to watch CGX workouts on your TV:
- Google Chromecast or Google TV Streamer devices use Chromecast to cast videos to your TV
- Apple TV devices use AirPlay to cast videos from an iPhone or iPad to your TV
-
Roku devices use AirPlay to cast videos from an iPhone
or
iPad to your TV (read about compatibility
here on Roku's website)
Casting in other ways
We've got further advice here on how to watch CGX workouts on a TV if you
don't
have a device that's compatible with Chromecast or AirPlay:
What if my TV isn't compatible with Chromecast or AirPlay?
Are your devices connected to the same WiFi network?
Both your mobile / tablet and your TV device need to be connected to the same WiFi network. This is how they speak to each other in order to send the video from the CGX app to your TV.
You can’t cast to your TV via cellular data. If your WiFi network is weak
in
a certain area, your device might actually be depending on cellular data
without
you realising. A good step would be to
switch off cellular data on your device and try again.
Are you casting from the app or mirroring your screen?
What's the difference?
When you cast, you're telling Chromecast or AirPlay to stream the workout video directly from the CGX app. This is the best method for quality because the video is fetched directly by the TV, reducing strain on your internet network. You can use your mobile device for other things while casting videos to your TV.
Mirroring (sometimes called screen sharing) works differently to casting: rather than sending the video to your TV so it's played there instead of your mobile device, mirroring copies exactly what you see on your mobile device to your TV. It means you can't use your mobile device for other things at the same time. Mirroring can put strain on your internet network, potentially leading to lags or disruptions.
How do I know whether I'm casting or mirroring?
To cast from CGX using Chromecast or AirPlay, tap on the icons at the top right corner of the workout screen:
Mirroring is a feature on your mobile or tablet itself, not within the CGX app. This is what the mirroring option looks like on an iPhone and an Android phone:
Here at CGX, we recommend casting over mirroring. That’s
because
mirroring might be less stable because of the additional demand on your devices
and internet network.
Troubleshooting steps
Here are some steps to try to resolve general issues with casting from CGX to your TV:
- Check both your mobile / tablet and the TV device are connected to the same WiFi network and WiFi band (e.g. both on 2.4GHz or both on 5GHz)
- Check your mobile / tablet isn’t leaning on mobile data disguised as a WiFi connection (to avoid this, switch off mobile data on your device)
- Check your internet connection strength (we suggested using www.fast.com)
- Restart your mobile / tablet
- Unplug your TV device from the wall, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in again
- If your TV device is plugged into an extension lead / power strip, try plugging it directly into the wall instead
- AirPlay: Are early CGX videos (like Beastmode) casting, but later videos (like IRON PRO) aren’t? This tells us your TV device is probably using AirPlay V1 which is no longer supported
